This is Al’s solo album. Three numbers are live stage performances with Al and his Martin HD-28 guitar. The others show Al as a “one man band” where he plays guitars, mandolin, acoustic up-right bass and does all the vocals & harmony.

Al received the DECMA “ Recording Of The Year”
– Annual Award Show 1990

Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine review:
“ Al Hawkes is the man responsible for some good releases……this nice album arrived with Mr. Hawkes himself at front and center, singing  and flatpicking his way through some standards, semi-standards, along with a few apparent originals…….... Al Hawkes has a nice
baritone voice that will remind you a little of Lee Moore, with a nice down-east accent”.

DECMA Award Show 1991

Al sings and plays guitar, mandolin & tenor banjo with a great bunch of musicians: Don Roy, fiddles; Jay Young, acoustic bass; Evans Fitch, dobro and pedal steel guitar. Herman McGee is a special guest on 5-string banjo.

Face Magazine said: “No matter what the style or tempo, Hawkes’ voice is the primary attraction. It’s hard to think of a country performer on any level with a simple, sincere and downright pretty a delivery as Al Hawkes”

A mixture of  un-plugged acoustic “Americana” music featuring Old-time Country, Bluegrass, Jazz/Swing, Folk, Blues and Old “Pop” Tunes.

Face Magazine: “It probably goes without saying that this is “unplugged” with AlHawkes on guitar and mandolin, CarterLogan on banjo and guitar and Al Doane on stand-up bass.  ….. what’s most impressive about Getting’ It All Together is the range of material Hawkes has drawn together on which to put the group’s own spin….. beyond the songs, though, it’s the players who make this even more worth listening to.  …..and Hawkes takes a virtuoso turn on mandolin on his own “Crazy Fingers Rag”, which won him Instrumentalist of the Year honors from the Country Music Associations of America in 1990.  …..AlHawkes & His String Fusion are just too good at what they do to be any less than thoroughly appreciated, if not completely relished”.

Bluegrass Now Magazine – “AlHawkes has been performing bluegrass and old-time country music since the early 1950’s…. (the album) tenderly traverses longtime favorites from Hawkes vast live repertoire.  ….While the album certainly extends Hawkes’ legacy, it clearly paints a bigger picture – the power of the music itself.
